HELMUT J. FRIEDL

I am an Austrian artist who, starting from photography, embarked on a journey to explore the intersection between photography and painting. Beginning with analogue photography in the 1990s, digital photography with its almost inexhaustible possibilities has shaped a large part of my thirty-year occupation with the medium of photography. But within me was always the desire to create something unique and escape the inflationary nature of digital photography.

I am currently transferring multi-layered digital images onto acrylic wood surfaces in a manual transfer process, thereby making the photographic representation unique, with all the imperfections caused by the process.  The aesthetics of the imperfect comes to the fore. Personally, I consider myself to be a very political and socially critical spirit, who is always looking for other perspectives in order to be able to better understand problems and grievances.

However, it is not my job as an artist to say what is good and what is wrong. I only see my task in creating a platform for the viewer with my pictures, on the basis of which he can deal with his own attitudes, values and prejudices. I am interested in cross-genre projects and would be very happy to get in touch with artists from the fields of performance, installation, expressive painting and literature.

If my style is interesting for you as a gallery owner, I would be very happy to hear from you as well.
